Focusing on one task at a time has become very difficult in our modern age with many distractions. It is not uncommon to have your smartphone next to you as you try to accomplish a task, only to find it buzzing with texts, social media alerts, and weather updates every few minutes. In order to be productive at school and work, it is important to remove potential distractions from the environment and to properly prepare ahead of time. There are a number of different ways to set yourself up for a successful, productive day.
Sleep! Try to get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep every night. Getting an adequate amount of rest each night is essential to stay focused during the day. Lack of sleep may affect yo
ur problem solving skills, and make it difficult to retain information. Plan to get to bed at a decent time in order to be alert when you wake up in the morning.
Food! Make sure you eat a balanced breakfast. Steer clear of a sugary breakfast and opt for nutrient
dense foods such as fruit, whole grain cereal, oatmeal, eggs, or yogurt. Pack your own lunch the night before work and school with balanced portions. It is much easier to eat good meals when they are planned ahead of time which will help you avoid fast food trips. For a packed lunch, choose fresh veggies, lean protein and a complex carbohydrate for sustained energy throughout the afternoon.
Water! Staying hydrated is essential to maintain healthy body functions. Drinking water is the best way to stay hydrated and can improve mental and physical sharpness. Water allows your body to cleanse out toxins leaving you refreshed.
Participate! Try to answer more questions during class or share your opinions and ideas during work meetings. Make sure to take class time as the opportunity to have your teacher answer any questions you may have about the lesson. Seek clarification at work from your superiors for any project or tasks that are confusing ahead of time. If you seek clarification on assignments and tasks at school and work ahead of time, it will allow you to focus on finishing them quickly rather than trying to figure out what you’re supposed to be doing.
Daily goal! Make a list of everything you need to accomplish during the day. Every time you feel as though you’re getting bored and tired, look at the list. Lists help you stay focused on specific goals that you want to accomplish and can help you be intentional with how you spend your time. A list is a good way to stay on track during the day and it is satisfying when you’re able to cross things off of a list.
Exercise! Making time to be more active will give you a natural energy boost. Get those running shoes on and get that heart rate up. Sometimes even a simple walk around the block, or a good stretch will be enough to help you re-focus on the task at hand.
Remove distractions! There are endless distractions around us every day. However, there are some things we can do to prevent ourselves from being distracted. Leave your phone on silence and only allow yourself to check notifications on a break every hour or two. Make sure that you are in a quiet environment to do class and work tasks. Being in a familiar environment will prevent your curiosity from constantly checking out your surroundings
Incorporating these simple things into your daily routine will prepare your body to focus, mentally and physically, on whatever you must accomplish. Use these tips to be a person that is ready to seize the day!
